EnvironmentCrystal Springs is a Friend to the Environment

Since 1996, when CourseCo took over management of Crystal Springs Golf Course, high standards have been set and the course has received significant recognition for progressive environmental management.

The course is located in the 24,000-acre Crystal Springs Watershed just uphill from the drinking water storage facility for the City of San Francisco. Only very limited recreational activities are allowed in the watershed other than golf.

Environmental goals have been incorporated into a comprehensive plan adopted at the course that include expanding native plant areas and creating wildlife corridors, reducing the number of irrigated acres, enhancing wildlife habitat and running a recycling program.

In 1997, staff and management developed the following environmental statement of purpose to serve as the springboard for work at the course: “To lead in environmental management by continuously building knowledge and developing innovative practices and to achieve sustainable management of the properties in our care for the benefit of the natural environment, the community and our company.”

Our clubhouse includes a display of animals to help share information about the mammals and birds that call Crystal Springs Golf Course their home, including the great horned owl and mountain lions. We have worked with the Boy Scouts, Native Plant Society and the Bluebird Society and others to enhance the environment at Crystal Springs.

Our course has a beautiful natural environment that is being managed to protect and enhance what we have and demonstrates how golf can be a positive example of environmental stewardship.

We are fully certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary and we have been certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council, an environmental organization which works with large landowners.
